-
- --- TAPCIS NEWS BRIEFS ---
-
- EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN (ESP) OFFER CLOSED TO NEW MEMBERS
- We are no longer offering new extended service plans (ESP). All
- existing ESP members will continue to receive the services described.
- We're delighted that so many of you took advantage of this offer
- while it was available. Updates, new versions, this newsletter, and
- telephone technical support are available to non-ESP members on an
- ala carte basis.
-
- DO YOU NEED A TELEPHONE CONSULTATION?
- Would you believe that 90% of the time we spend on telephone
- technical support has *nothing* to do with any kind of TAPCIS-caused
- problem?
-
- Most callers are confronting some brand of computer system "bug"--the
- kind where one can't easily tell "who is to blame." Others just need
- the help of an expert to resolve an online problem or to help them
- understand how to best transact certain types of business through
- CompuServe.
-
- If you would like our help by phone, we'd welcome your call to
- 1-800-USA-GROUP (872-4768), or outside the U.S. at +1-301-387-4500,
- during east coast business hours (our families lay claim to us
- outside those hours). You do not need to be a TAPCIS user to take
- advantage of this service. There is a nominal charge of $1.50 per
- minute, with no minimum. Most calls are less than 10 minutes, and
- like all Support Group services, your satisfaction is guaranteed.
-
- LARGE INTERNET MESSAGES UNDER HMI RECEIVED AS NONAME.DAT
- CompuServe under HMI Mail takes Internet messages over 50K and tells
- the microcomputer that it has received a text file called
- "NONAME.DAT". In truth, CIS received a big message, NOT a file. While
- the contents in some cases may be a MIME or UUENCODED binary file, in
- many cases the message is a large digest coming from a list server.
- TAPCIS 6.1 will download these files as NONAME.DAT into the download
- directory. A notice to that effect is placed in the message file. If
- a NONAME.DAT file already exists, NONAMEnn.DAT will be used (e.g.,
- NONAME01.DAT).
-
- In future TAPCIS versions, we plan to offer an option to have any
- files called NONAME.DAT put in the message file instead. However, we
- need to find out CIS' plans for automatic MIME decoding before
- implementing that feature.
-
-
- --- COMPUSERVE NEWS BRIEFS ---
-
- COMPUSERVE IPO HITS; STOCK SYMBOL CSRV
- CompuServe Inc., is now a publicly traded company. H&R Block offered
- 16 million shares (17.7% of the company) at $30/share, ticker symbol
- CSRV (NASDAQ). As of Friday's close, the price had risen to $33.
-
- While many will say that the less than meteoric rise indicates that
- CompuServe isn't "hot," I take the position that an IPO that goes up
- 100% or more in the first day was not fairly priced. Instead, a few
- select big investors or "friends of the company" are given a chance
- to "flip" the stock on opening day for huge profits. The big rise
- attracts the speculators, who bid up a short supply of stock (in the
- case of Netscape only 5 million shares) to heights beyond all
- relation to the underlying value or revenue of the company--but
- gaining great press. Yahoo!
-
- It's no surprise when such rapidly rising stars decline quickly from
- such speculative heights. CompuServe's starting valuation at just
- short of $3 billion seems to be much more supportable. (Note: The
- rest of the CompuServe Inc., shares will be passed to H&R Block
- stockholders in some fashion within a year.)
-
- MICROSOFT PULLS SUPPORT FROM COMPUSERVE; FORUMS TO BE INDEPENDENT
- Microsoft pulled out of its CompuServe forums at the end of last
- week, moving all "official" discussion areas to Microsoft hosted
- newsgroups (over 200 of them) at news.microsoft.com. However, the
- forums themselves have kept the same GO words, and the majority are
- already under new management. Many of the forums (24) were taken over
- by the Windows Users Group Network (WUGNET) which already had 14
- independently managed forums under its control, and most of the
- others by Stream (a $1B+ company).
-
- An independent support forum does lose the "official" presence of the
- publisher. What it can gain is a greater sense of community. The
- members will hopefully recognize that the value of the resource now
- depends solely on what they collectively offer back to the group in
- messages answered and files contributed. Remember, in independent
- forums, the sysops are there as facilitators; they do not have the
- "responsibility" to answer all questions posed.
-
- COMPUSERVE CD DEAL MAKES IT "FREE"
- The CompuServeCD is a multimedia CD-ROM with links to the online
- world, along with the current version of Netscape. You can subscribe
- for $24 + $6 S&H and receive 7 CD-ROMs and a usage credit. (The
- direct mailing says that a $29.50 usage credit will spread out over
- the year; when you sign up online, they say that 10 free hours will
- be posted to your account within 14 days). GO CCDEAL.
-
- SECOND PASSWORD STILL IN EFFECT FOR SOME SIGN-UPS
- Surprise, surprise. We found out after our last newsletter that
- announced the discontinuation of the second sign-up password that it
- is still being sent in many cases, especially to new overseas sign-
- ups. While this may reduce some fraud, it continues to be confusing
- for new members... especially when the letter is delayed past the
- date when the new password goes into effect! It's time to get rid of
- this altogether.
-
- WOW! SUBSCRIPTION KIT DELAYED?
- We've not yet received any of the WOW! subscription kits we've
- ordered through regular channels. Until we do, we are deferring the
- report on how WOW! may fit into your online usage strategy.
-

-
- HomeValue Report (GO CIS:HOMEVALUE)
- Find out the current market value (based on the state's appraisal
- rather than a current market analysis) of many properties in the
- United States. Premium charge of $38/hr. I was able to find out how
- much my house in Baltimore recently sold for, and how much my Dad
- paid for his condo in Florida. Lots of properties are missing,
- however, and not all counties are listed. While I know this is
- "public information," I dislike the fact that any nosey neighbor or
- marketing firm can so easily find out how much I paid for my house.
- Perhaps we need to redefine what is appropriate "public information."
